About our B&B

Aerial view of The Sword & Anchor The Sword & Anchor claims a place of prominence from its hilltop site in the coastal community of Chester Basin.

Over the years this grand place has been sanctuary for seafarers, travelers, gold miners and families.

Guests at the Sword & Anchor are offered not only a personal glimpse of the colourful history but also a spectacular view of the waters of Mahone Bay.

Renovated to include 8 guest rooms with private bath ensuite, a family suite, and a separate guest house, this delightful waterfront property offers all the charm and intimacy of a country inn.

This beautiful getaway is only a 45-minute drive from Halifax and 60 minutes from Halifax International Airport.

History

The inn was originally built by Levi Oxner, a Sea Captain, in 1882. It is believed to have replaced an Inn destroyed by fire. The Oxner family accommodated travellers and tourists in their home and in 1898 Levi's daughter acquired the property, upgrading it and calling it the Boylan Hotel. Many years later in 1946, it was converted and renamed the Bay View Apartments, which it remained until 1995. For almost one hundred and twenty years, the Sword & Anchor, as it is now known, has stood a loyal beacon and a welcoming resting place along the South Shore.

Though it has seen several alterations since 1882, the Sword & Anchor has weathered the test of time and change, proudly bearing the South Shore's friendly character and tradition throughout the years.
